Smoke extraction and stair pressurization are a separate life-safety loop: keep escape routes tenable, hold pressure in stairs and lift shafts, stop smoke filling atria or parking. Malls, underground parking and many public buildings cannot close expertise without it.
Typical plant: smoke exhaust fans, fire-rated ducts, dampers, makeup air and pressurization of protected zones. Airflows are calculated from volume, height and fire scenario — a “big roof fan” without design rarely passes review.
Materials matter: fire rating, tightness, listed dampers and fire-alarm interlock. Office-grade galvanized duct is not a substitute. Paper mistakes cost more than a proper design before install.
